1. The word of the LORD came to Jonah the son of Amittai saying,

3. But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Jaffa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.
4. The LORD hurled a great wind on the sea and there was a great storm on the sea so that the ship was about to break up.
5. Then the sailors became afraid and every man cried to his god, and they threw the cargo which was in the ship into the sea to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone below into the hold of the ship, lain down and fallen sound asleep.
6. So the captain approached him and said, "How is it that you are sleeping? Get up, call on your god. Perhaps your god will be concerned about us so that we will not perish."

G-d is sending us on a mission - to go home and to be a light unto the nations, but good Orthodox Jews prefer to run to the Galut and to be lulled to sleep by "exciting and lucrative job opportunities" and "rewarding retirement opportunities". Chaval.

just some thoughts:
I know how you feel, and I guess I feel the same way. Most of them know not what they are doing. I'm sure many a galut shul rabbi knows the truth, but they truly believe that their main job is too try and keep Jews faithful, not aliyah. On top of that, I would understand many a shul governing committee warning employed rabbis not to open their mouth about aliyah since, in effect, this weakens the community.
Religious aliyah is rising bit by bit, but I think that if we really want to save our brethen, we'll have to turn Israel into a bit more of America, even though we specifically tell them not to try and do that. It's not enough to say 'come home, it's the right thing'. I think that an effort should be made in more Israeli cities to generate and nurture 'american-style' community awareness based around the shul. The torani garins have had limited success, face it they were naive amateurs with limited guidance. The tremendous amount of chesed and love of Israel in these small groups, often couldn't compare to the productivity of one Chabad shaliach who had the backing of world Chabad, not financially, but rather support and 'lessons learned' elsewhere.
I understand that there is some sort of 'Rothchild fund' that is trying to promote community rabbis here is Israel. Israeli shuls usually don't have rabbis, and lack spiritual guidance beyond the shul committee made up of volunteers.
In any case, the truth is, already been said on the blog, that most American Jews feel more comfortable living with the goyim and the culture then in mediteranean Israel. If you can start weaning Jews off the Knicks, Dodgers, 'Lost' and 'Ben Afflek', then they might find it easier to move here.
