    Ani Sameach meod l'chem. Baruch Ha'Shem.

    You may not remember me but I came and visited the station in Bet-el last year about this time. Anyway, except congratulations from the Billingtons.

    "But thou, O LORD, shalt endure for ever; and thy remembrance unto all generations. Thou shalt arise, and have mercy upon Zion: for the time to favour her, yea, the set time, is come.     Today the Almighty is building up Zion. May you be blessed with your beautiful daughter and may she be like Leah and Rachel who built the houses of Israel. May you, Malka and your daughter continue to be blessed in having a real, tangible role in building Zion in our days.

    Leah Bat Tzion

    The name:

    Leah was Malkah's mom who passed away a bit over a year ago. Leah Bernath was a great lover and defender of Zion and she was proud of our work. When she passed away, we felt that we that a strong advocate in this world had become a strong advocate in heaven. We feel as though the birth of this child was vigourly advocated in heaven by Leah Bernath and we are proud to honor her name and the name of our great matriarch Leah. The name Leah is also hinted at in the weekly parsha in which little Leah was born: Leah is the same letters as Ohel, tent, and the Torah tells us a few times in Lech Lecha that Abraham tented (Va-ye-ehal) all over Eretz Yisrael. Leah is also the same letters as HaEl (the Lord) or Elo-ha (G-d).

    Malkah and I also we felt that the name Leah would fit well with our daughter's second name, Bat-Tzion, which means 'Daughter of Zion' - as though the Leah that passed away was reborn as a daughter of Zion. We also had other reasons for calling her Bat-Tzion: Malkah and I were very moved to have a daughter born in Jerusalem. The view from the Shaarei Tzedek hospital's 8th floor, with all of Jerusalem spread out before us, reminded us of the great gift which Hashem has bestowed upon his people. Also, we felt that it was the merit of Zion which allowed us to surpass all the obstacles to this birth. Finally, we had the great merit of bringing Leah Bat-Zion home the very day on which we celebrated our 4- year anniversary of Aliyah. It was clear to us that this was no coincidence.

    We would like to thank the many people who prayed for us, advised us, and cared for us. We cannot name them all, for we know many of you prayed for us. But we would like to thank Shmuel HaNavi, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, the Baal HaYesurim in Tzfat, the Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rav Leon HaLevi, the staff at Shaarei Tzedek, Michal Finkelstein, and of course our loving parents - without these people we would not be here today. Finally we give gratitude and acknowledgment to our beloved G-d who gave this miracle and blessing - may it be so for all of Am Yisrael.

    What a beautiful name, thank you for sharing the meaning behind it. I am sitting here reading your blog with tears in my eyes, homesick for a land that I've never stepped foot on and where I know I belong.

    Mazel Tov, Leah Bat Tzion ... appropiately named. Every Jewish child born is a threat to the enemies of our state. One shall put a thousand to flight and two ten thousand to flight, kol hakavod may it be soon in our days.
