Eretz Yisrael is FUNDAMENTAL to Living a True Jewish Life.

[Picture of Northern Israel by Theo from Holland]

Hello, my name is N. and I was educated in right-wing yeshivas for many years and the attitude of most of my rebbeim and friends was: "if you can move to Israel-great. If you can't- no big deal, you can study Torah and be a good Jew in America too."

There was never an emphasis an settling the land or making alliya. Over time, as I became more exposed to the teachings of Rav Kook, I began to realize that the prolonged exile has had an effect on everyone's thinking - even the rabbis. We think of Eretz Yisrael as some kind of "icing on the cake" to our Torah learning and strict adherence to the mitzos. The reality, is that Eretz Yisrael is FUNDAMENTAL to living a true Jewish life.

I desperatly want to make aliya with my wife and 3 children. When I tell people this, they reply "Oh, thats not a very smart idea- your kids will have a very difficult time adjusting and it may even cause them to go off the derech". I feel in my heart of hearts that aliyah is such a special mitvah- equal to all the mitzos- and if I am doing a mitva for the sake of heaven, Hashem will not allow any bad to befall me or my family on account of the mitzva. Also, who says my kids can't get just as messed up- chas v'shalom- here in America? There are so many kids here in America that go off the derech, so why not take my chances in Israel where at least for all the future generations after my kids, they will have the benefit of being part of Israeli society- which truly is, sooner or later, going to be the only place on earth for a Jew to be.

The problem is that I am only qualified to be a Rebbi and my wife a kindergarten Morah. There is no shortage of those in Israel, so the question remains "how would we make ends meet?". I am willing to sacrafice alot to move to Israel but I don't know where to start. Is there a way you could help me to make aliya?

    Dear Rabbi N.,

I don't know that anyone can help you to make aliyah. Like other leaps of faith you have made in your life, it will require reserves of emunah you did not know you possessed.

It may encourage you to know that we made aliyah with many strikes against us. We are middle-aged. We don't have a small fortune. In fact, we came with a small savings, long-since depleted, and our military pension. AND a couple of teenagers. We did not have a job, or the wherewithal to buy a home, or job prospects.

It took us 16 years to finally make aliyah. One of the reasons that we delayed was because all of the "experts" around us told us that aliyah would drive our kids off the derech, and onto Ben Yehuda Street (their euphemism for the questionable night life pursued by some teens who are forced to live their parents' dream, without IMHO the proper preparation). Of course, that scared us. But then -- as you suggested in your letter -- we discovered that "Ben Yehuda Street" is all over Chutz l'Aretz, too.

We brought our now excellent and hardy teenangels (whom we had been telling were "displaced Israelis" since birth, so as to avoid the "our dream is their nightmare" scenario). We and they are very happy in Israel, having chosen to re-invent ourselves, to not cling to America and its values. We cannot imagine living anywhere else.

The Ribono shel Olam runs the world, and He had His reasons for wanting us to remain over-long in Chu"l. I trust Him, and know His plan is superior to mine. But if I am permitted a regret, it is that we didn't ignore the naysayers, and bring our kids when they were small.

I know one of the benefits of having had to pine for Eretz Yisrael for 16 years. Of course you have known couples who waited a decade or more to be blessed, finally, with a first child. You can be sure that in their eyes, that child is absolutely perfect.

Because we had to wait so very long, this baby, this dream, is perfect. The troubles evaporate, compared to the joy of finally, finally having our dream.

I wish you and your dear family the clarity to make the choice best suited for you to fulfill your missions in the world, and the courage to stick to your plan once made.

Just telling Hashem how very much you want Eretz Yisrael is half the battle.

    Moadim l'simcha!

If you want more Jews in Israel, get rid of women's rights in Israel. Women's rights leads to negative population growth.

All the pro-women's rights stuff, I guess, is from pro-women's rights politicians aswell as some rabbis from the past who wanted to change things.

The Torah seems to be very friendly to men, aslong as they don't try to steal someone else's wife.

    Here's a nice old law:
If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he lives.

Here's another translation that says the same thing: If a man finds a girl who is a virgin, who is not engaged, and seizes her and lies with her and they are discovered, then the man who lay with her shall give to the girl's father fifty shekels of silver, and she shall become his wife because he has violated her; he cannot divorce her all his days.

If you are in need of a sweet young wife (maybe in addition to the wife you have), if you really need the girl, you can have her.

Imagine: a modern country that just had men's liberty, without the yoke of women's rights upon the men.

Ancient laws can sometimes be good for men, and also good for populations.

Sadly... this will never happen, the decline will continue...

I really love the old law. As it is.

    Hello Mr. Anonymous Troll Sir,

If you would ever study what the ORAL LAW has to say about those sections of the Written Law you would realize what a total fool you sound like. Yes, indeed, a completely foolish ignorant nincompoop!

    Shalom,
    Pinchas

The oral law you speak of is garbage written by Rabbis who wanted to get around the written law.

The men who wrote the law were far harder and far better men than the scum that subvert it to the detriment of their fellow man.

It's also a brash lie that every Rabbi agreed or agrees with the others on what Deuteronomy contains. Some good Rabbis take it for what it says rather than trying to explain it away just like christian apologetics.

It is an absolute religious obligation to live in Eretz Israel with the only exception of famine.
