Busted for Praying!

Shalom Yishai,

Freedom of religion in America? Only if you are muslim. Then they will install footbaths for you in airports. It's true that Jews are arrested on the Temple Mount for praying, but those who use it as an excuse not to make aliyah should read the stories below:

Praying passenger removed from flight. An Orthodox Jewish man, who wanted to travel to San Francisco by plane, left his seat and went to the back of the plane to pray before the Flight 9 to San Francisco took off. He didn’t follow the flight attendants’ advices to return to his seat. As a result, he was ejected from the flight....

Jewish man removed from airplane for praying.

Some fellow passengers are questioning why an Orthodox Jewish man was removed from an Air Canada Jazz flight in Montreal last week for praying. The man was a passenger on a Sept. 1 flight from Montreal to New York City when the incident happened.

Man arrested at a Rosh Hashanah prayer meeting.

A group of about 100 people in Central Florida claim they were harassed by deputies during a Rosh Hashanah prayer service that ended with an arrest. The group was celebrating the Jewish New Year at an off-campus house near the University of Central Florida Wednesday night when deputies were called to the house.

Jewish passenger saying morning prayers on Chicago train causes panic by putting on tefillin, which other passengers thought to be wires of explosive belt.

A Jewish passenger on a Chicago train was arrested after fellow passengers accused him of being a suicide bomber

    America the Paranoid.

May I just add that whenever I travel within the United States by air, I am taken to the lady frisking area faster than you can say "Little Mosque on the Prairie".

Don't get me wrong - I'm all about ethnic profiling. I think a hijab is basically a red flag (or red scarf) terror risk. But I am SO NOT Muslim - come on! Malkah Fleisher? Helloo? I burn on a cloudy day. I am a Jew! When are they going to learn that Jews aren't self-detonating?

While these stories are no doubt disturbing and do reflect on being in exile. However, what is being missed is that shortly after 9/11 Rabbonim advised against standing to pray on a plane or other types of public displays of observance. This become particularly serious on planes. It is unclear the fellow removed from the flight was done so because of a preceived danger or an overzealous exercise of authority by airline personel.
MNalkah, guess what 2 nights after we met in Yerushalyim my wife and I were at Newark catching our flight to Detroit we were taken for a seccondary search--most likely because we had just returned from the Middle East and you know my wife and I ARE SOOO NOOT MUSLIM either but the TSA folks are not being paid to think too much just stop the bad guys, so if they are too careful and catch all they need to then fine. But profiling wouldn't be a bad idea.

Anyone who uses the line, "religious Jews get harassed by police" or "Jews can't pray on the Temple Mount" as an excuse for not making aliyah is just in need of a justification. If both of those truths were miraculously fixed tomorrow (b'ezras Hashem) those people would just find another excuse.

    That being said...

Okay - let's be honest about this: the guy in the first story was not thinking straight. You don't stand up right before the plane is going to take off! Even in mid-flight, only El Al is kind enough to ignore safety regulations and allow ten or more men to stand in the back of the plane, crowding the aisles and/or kitchen area.

I've prayed many times in my seat on many different airlines, and I've never had a problem. While there are many legitimate claims to be made for Jews getting less religious consideration than Muslims do in the Western world today - sometimes the cause of these incidents is just the Jew's lack of common sense.

    I loved Malkah's comment that "Jews aren't self-detonating!

Somehow this story doesn't bother me...i suspect his Rabbi would have told him that post-911 you listen to the flight attendant, lest you bring shame to our people by being throw off the flight.
